Whenever possible, remove the part from your own vehicle first. Steps and tools may vary based on trim packages or modification to the vehicle by previous owners.
General instructions for removing an SUV taillight: all we needed was a Phillips head screwdriver for this vehicle. Open the lift gate and look for fasteners or access to fasteners behind the tail lights. On some SUVs, you may need to remove rear trim pieces to gain access to the tail light. Ours had two Philips head screws located here and here. Remove the fasteners retaining the taillight housing. After the fasteners are removed, you should be able to pull the tail light assembly out from the vehicle.
Disconnect any electrical connections. Electrical connectors can be very brittle so be careful when disconnecting them. Ours broke we tried to disconnect them and that does happen sometimes, with old connectors. If this happens to you, don't worry, it's not your fault.
And that's how you remove a tail light on an SUV.
